Lectern
The word lectern comes from the Latin word meaning "to read", because the lecterns primarily function is as a reading stand. It is typically used by lay people to read the scripture lessons , to lead the congregation in prayer, and to make announcements. The lectern is in the shape of an eagle perched on a ball. The ball represents the world and the eagle represents the word of God. This is to symbolise God's word being spread around the world. |

The
Altar
The Alter occupies a prominent place in the chancel of the church. It plays a central role in the sacrament of the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. The bread and the wine are placed upon the altar, and prayers of consecration and thanksgiving are offered by the vicar. The area around the altar is surrounded by altar rails, which provide a symbolic barrier between the sanctity of the altar and the surrounding space. Most churches generally have a single altar, although larger ones may have one or more "side chapels", each with its own altar. |
